Patented hotel amenities

“Hotel Amenities” are part of the project “Bamboo Hotel” designed by Ate Rote for the Fujian Province Hotels Association. The complete patented serie has been developed in collaboration with Artop-Shenzen which engineered and manufactured the prototypes. The has led to the exhibition at the Shenzen Design Week 2023. In 2025 these prototypes have been acquired by Shenzhen Bay Culture Square and included in the permanent collection of the D-Bay Design Museum, Shenzhen.

These hospitality amenities are designed as a modular family of small, essential objects — combs, razors, soap holders, music boxes, toothbrushes, keyholders and pencils — all conceived with a minimal aesthetic language based on pure volumes and precise geometric cuts.
Each piece is CNC-milled from solid bamboo, showcasing the material heritage of Fujian Province and its culture of renewable craftsmanship. By using interlocking volumes rather than additive parts, the collection demonstrates how bamboo can be elevated from a local raw material to a refined design language for contemporary hotels.
The projects explore how sustainable regional resources can be transformed into a tactile brand identity, turning everyday amenities into small architectural artefacts.

Bamboo Cat Ammock

Fujian Bamboo Institute

Details

A patented screwless-joint cat ammock

Among the bamboo prototypes presented at the Fujian Bamboo Institute, the patented cat hammock stands out as a clear example of structural intelligence expressed through minimal means. The piece is constructed from CNC-cut bamboo elements assembled without screws or hardware, using a system of interlocking joints that are kept under tension by the textile cradle itself. Instead of acting as a passive support, the fabric becomes a load-bearing component, stabilising the frame through controlled tension and making disassembly immediate and fully reversible. In 2025 this prototype have been acquired by Shenzhen Bay Culture Square and included in the permanent collection of the D-Bay Design Museum, Shenzhen.

The hammock extends the research approach behind the wider collection exhibited at the Institute, where bamboo is treated not only as a traditional craft material but as a platform for engineering logic and new product typologies. By embracing Design-for-Disassembly and hybrid structural behaviour, the object demonstrates how bamboo can be translated into contemporary pet products that are lightweight, durable, repairable and aesthetically understated — aligning with the Institute’s broader strategy of showcasing future-oriented applications of bamboo in scalable consumer markets.
