Generative Intelligence Between Stone, Metal, Water and Light
for Vardakeios Foundation
Lithic AI brings together a series of concepts developed by Ate Rote as design material and documentation for the ‘Generative AI for Concept Creation’ course, held for the Vardakeios Foundation. The course formed part of the foundation’s activities in Ermoupoli, on the island of Syros, aimed at fostering informed literacy in artificial intelligence and generative AI through accessible and practice-based learning experiences.
Alongside introducing the use of different generative tools, the course was structured around Roberto Rota’s research at the Department of Product and Systems Design Engineering at the University of the Aegean on creative design processes. Its purpose was to move beyond the purely technical use of AI, demonstrating how it can be critically integrated into the exploration, development, and definition of design concepts.
The concepts explore material and functional hybridisation through the convergence of stone, metal, water, and light. Within this process, artificial intelligence does not determine a final solution but provides heuristic stimuli, suggesting associations, variations, and unexpected directions that the designer interprets through their own sensitivity. The result is a language in which archaic character, technical precision, and computational imagination converge in essential and sensorially rich objects.
